Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Headwinds
The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.
The Core Challenges of Leadership
Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
