In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
